Top Grossing Movies of Last 6 Decades

Hello people!

Today I bring you, the highest grossing Bollywood movies of the last six decades. I’m sure you know about most of them already! 😀

  1. 2001-10 – 3 Idiots (2009)

Earnings: 202 crore INR

At Current Rupee Value (CRV): 280.78 crore INR

All izz well with 3 Idiots. This movie talks about the pressure faced by students in their endeavours to live up to parents’ expectations. No wonder this movie had a huge following in populous countries like China (Yes, I asked strangers on Omegle 😛 ) and India where getting into a reputed engineering college parallels Nirvana!

  1. 1991-2000 – Hum Aapke Hain Koun (1994)

Earnings: 69.75 crore INR

At CRV: 229.47 crore INR

The Salman Khan, before he started kicking villains into the stratosphere, was a family guy.  This movie had a big, happy family, lots of sanskar, and you guessed it right, Alok Nath! In fact, this movie was a handbook to Indian family, marriage and traditions 😉

  1. 1981-90 – Maine Pyar Kiya (1989)

Earnings: 14 crore INR

At CRV: 73.92 crore INR

This decade was perhaps the dry era of Bollywood. Amitabh Bachchan’s star was fading and no other superstar was in sight. That’s when Sooraj Barjatya gave us this movie with the right doses of dosti, pyaar, sanskaar and Alok Nath!

Ps. let’s not forget Salman’s dancing skills 😉

  1. 1971-80 – Sholay (1975)

Earnings: 15 crore INR

At CRV: 193.35 crore INR

Two conmen (best friends Jai and Viru), summoned by a self-righteous former cop to kill a notorious dacoit. This was the epic Sholay. With a stellar cast, this is probably the only movie where the side characters became just as famous. Samba, Kalia, Thakur and Dhanno (yes!) are legends today.

  1. 1961-70 – Sangam (1964)

Earnings: 4 crore INR

At CRV: 156.6 crore INR

You may not have heard about this movie, but Sangam was the big daddy of love triangles, made by the big daddy of Indian cinema, Raj Kapoor. Foreign locations, romance, huge budget and a long running time – it all began with Sangam!

  1. 1951-60 – Mughal-E-Azam (1960)

Earnings: 5.5 crore INR

At CRV: 253.5 crore INR

Although apparently historically inaccurate, Mughal-e-azam was the most opulent, extravagant and larger-than-life movie ever created. Such was the scale that it took 16 years to be made. Here’s a gif to sum up the movie the best.

Akbar was pissed and Anarkali couldn’t care less 😉

All gifs have been made by me using gifyoutube 🙂
